We begin this exciting tour to Masada and the Dead Sea by traveling south of Jerusalem through the Judean Hills. The tour from Masada passes by the Pousada do Bom Samaritano and pauses at the sign indicating sea level. From this point, the tour descends below sea level to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the planet. The tour runs along the edge of the Dead Sea, where the turquoise water is coated with a white crust of salt.
Our first stop on this tour is Masada, a flat-topped “mesa” or rock outcrop that rises 450 meters from the desert plains. We took a cable car to the summit of the Masada plateau, where there are stunning views of the Dead Sea.
In Masada, we visited the ruins of King Herod's palace-fortress, built in 37-31 BC. The excavation of Herod's fortress revealed guardhouses, water cisterns, storerooms, palaces and a bathhouse, as well as mosaics and murals. Thanks to the dry climate and remote location, the structures have been well preserved.
About 100 years later, during the First Jewish-Roman War (66–73 CE), a group of Jewish fanatics took refuge in Masada. They held off the Romans for several months until the Romans built an earthen ramp to climb the steep cliffs. When Roman troops reached the plateau, they discovered that all 960 Jews had killed themselves rather than be captured and forced to abandon their God. This event in Jewish history made Masada a symbol of Jewish determination not to give up its independence.
The trip leaves Masada and takes you to the nearby Dead Sea, passing through Ein Gedi and Qumran, the site of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Our final stop on this tour is the Dead Sea, where you can relax on the beach and unwind. Enjoy the natural health benefits of the Dead Sea environment, including the salt-rich water, oxygen-rich air and mineral-rich black mud that you can use as a natural skin mask. Don't leave until you've taken a photo of yourself floating in the Dead Sea!
We begin the tour of Jerusalem's old city with a panoramic view of Jerusalem from Mount Scopus. From here we see beyond the Old City walls to the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock.
We walked down the hill past an ancient Jewish cemetery and stopped at the Biblical Garden of Gethsemane and the impressive Church of All Nations. We will then see the Kidron Valley, where monumental Jewish tombs stood for centuries. We approached the Old City passing the Church of the Dormition on Mount Zion.
Visit to the room of the Last Supper, where Christ ate with his apostles on the eve of his crucifixion. This room is also called the Cenacle as it is on a floor above the site of King David's Tomb.
The Jerusalem day tour enters the Armenian Quarter of the Old City through Zion's Gate and we pass St. James' Armenian Church. The guide will talk about the fascinating Armenian culture before we head to the Jewish quarter.
Here the tour pauses at the Byzantine-era Cardo. This 1,500-year-old excavated street was once Jerusalem's main thoroughfare.
In the Jewish Quarter, we stopped to see the sacred Western Wall. As the last surviving part of the Jewish Second Temple, the Western Wall is the holiest Jewish landmark in the world. Here we join others who come to place a prayer note in the cracks of the old wall. Next, our tour of Jerusalem's Old City retraces the course Jesus took as he carried his cross to Calvary - the Via Dolorosa.
We arrived at the sacred Holy Sepulcher. This 4th-century church contains the last Stations of the Cross, including Calvary, where Jesus was crucified and his tomb. The vast structure is shared by several Christian denominations and has more than 30 chapels.
The tour of Jerusalem's Old City comes to an end, but not before we have some retail therapy in the traditional Old City bazaar.
The Nazareth and Sea of Galilee (Kinneret) tour begins with a scenic drive north along the Mediterranean coast. The tour heads inland to the Valley of Armageddon, where we see Megiddo in the distance. Before arriving in Nazaré we passed through Monte da Precipitação. The book of Luke tells us how an angry mob tried to throw Jesus off this mountain.
In Nazareth, we visited the beautiful Church of the Annunciation built on the spot where the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary about her future child.
The tour continues to the nearby Church of São José, where the Holy Family lived and where José had his carpentry workshop.
Leaving Nazareth, the Christian Galilee tour continues through the idyllic countryside to the Sea of Galilee. We pass through Cana, the place where Jesus turned water into wine and see the Mount of Beatitudes where Christ gave his Sermon on the Mount.
The tour stops in Capernaum, where Jesus was based during his ministry in Galilee. In Capernaum we will see the Church built over the excavated house of Saint Peter and in the neighboring village of Tabgha - the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes.
The tour takes you along the coast of Kinneret, where Jesus walked on the water and calmed the sea. It was on these beaches that Jesus performed most of his miracles. We can enjoy the view of the Sea surrounded by green agricultural fields with the majestic Golan Heights rising on the opposite bank. We pass through Tiberias, the largest settlement on the shores of the beautiful Sea of Galilee, dating back more than 2,000 years.
The excursion to where the Jordan River meets the Sea of Galilee. It was here that Jesus may have been baptized by John. On this tour, it is possible that you will also be baptized here in the Jordan River.
After an exciting day filled with Christian sites in Galilee, we headed back south, passing Mount Tabor, site of the Transfiguration.
Visit the Garden Tomb, a rock-cut tomb located in Jerusalem, which was discovered in 1867 and was subsequently considered by some Christians – mainly Protestants and evangelicals – as the place of Jesus' burial and resurrection.
The Garden Tomb is adjacent to a rocky escarpment that since the mid-19th century has been proposed by some scholars as Golgotha. In contrast to this modern identification, the place where Roman Catholics and Orthodox traditionally associate with the death and resurrection of Christ is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, at least since the 4th century. Since 1894, the Garden Tomb and its surrounding gardens have been maintained as a place of worship and Christian reflection by a UK-based non-denominational Christian charitable trust called the Garden Tomb Association.
This tour of Bethlehem and Jericho passes by the Inn of the Good Samaritan, where Jesus told his famous parable. Driving through the Judean Desert, passing through Wadi Kelt, we see the 5th-century St. George's Monastery nestled in the cliffs and stop briefly at the "sea level" sign before heading down to Jericho.
In the Old Testament, the walls of Jericho fell when Joshua marched his army around the perimeter in the name of God. In the New Testament, Zacchaeus, the tax collector, climbed a sycamore fig tree to see Jesus entering Jericho. On our tour of Jericho, we see the famous sycamore tree. We can see the Mount of Temptation not far from Jericho. Here Jesus spent 40 days in the desert and the devil tried to tempt him to abandon God.
Leaving Jericho, the tour continues to Bethlehem, where Christ was born more than 2,000 years ago. The Bethlehem tour stops at Manger Square, where we visit the Church of the Nativity, which houses the Grotto of the Nativity where Jesus was born and where you can see the original mosaic excavated in the 4th century. Today the Church is a treasure of exquisite features. In the Holy Grotto, a silver star indicates the exact place where Christ was born.
The next stop in Belém is the Church of Santa Catalina. We went below the Church to an ancient cave where Saint Jerome translated the Hebrew Bible into Latin. We left Bethlehem on our journey back to Jerusalem, passing through the Field of the Shepherds. This is where shepherds tended their sheep at night on Christmas Eve.
There is a chance that this tour will repeat the Jordan River at the end.
